This is one of a pair of 17 to 18th century hand painted chests. Once kept in a monastery, this beautiful trunk was used to store old and precious manuscripts, thankas not intended for public viewing, small Tibetan rugs and very likely, ritual images, costumes and masks used in religious celebrations throughout the year. A majestic dragon stares from a single medallion in the center. He is surrounded by a repeating design that emulates the pattern of silk. brocade. The four corners are decorated with a water design and the edges of the chest and lid are bordered with cloud designs. The decorative but functional metal fittings and clasp are typical of Tibetan metal craft of this time.  Considering its age and size, it is remarkable that this chest is in extremely good condition.  Available as a pair with 18.
